In this month’s webinar, we sit down with Oliver Ma, a second-generation Chinese American, civil rights attorney, Harvard Law School graduate, and candidate for Lieutenant Governor of California (2026 cycle), for a wide-ranging conversation on identity, leadership, public service, and the role of Gen2 communities in today’s political climate. Oliver shares formative stories from growing up between Beijing and Orange County, including a powerful experience involving his grandmother that shaped his path into law and civil rights. He also breaks down what civil rights work actually looks like day-to-day, why he believes grassroots organizing matters, and how young people can get involved in meaningful ways, even without a traditional “politics” background. Welcome to the official launch of the TYCon Webinar Series — a new monthly series created to bring together students and young professionals from Chinese American backgrounds to discuss culture, business, politics, identity, and more. In our very first webinar, “Navigating Chinese Etiquette,” we explore the unspoken rules and cultural nuances that shape professional and social interactions in China. As China continues to play a major role in global business, technology, and politics, more students and professionals find themselves working with Chinese colleagues, companies, and institutions. For children of Chinese immigrants, we are uniquely positioned, but that doesn’t mean we automatically understand every cultural norm. Small details, such as how to address someone, when to pay the bill, how to decline a drink, or how to “maintain face” (面子), can significantly impact how we’re perceived.
